PMVC provides Sitting Volleyball at Veterans Day
Posted by Nobody on 21 April 2015
PMVC have been endorsing sitting volleyball in the Plymouth community for the last 3+ years with Awareness workshops, CPD days, school events, taster sessions, demos & friendly matches, but a new link with Devonports Rehabilitation Centre is a landmark event in the progression of the sport in Plymouth and the surrounding area.
Last week, I was given the opportunity to run a taster session in the state of the art rehab centre based in HMNB Devonport. The 90 minute session was for injured servicemen and women interested in trying out this energetic and fast paced variation of volleyball.
The event was well attended and well received by an enthusiastic group of armed forces players. Some had played standing volleyball before their injuries and some had never touched a volleyball before but due to its inclusivity, all were able to learn how to move, how to contact the ball and how to play the game. The session finished with a friendly which saw some great passages of play and, with it, new found hope that there is enough interest in sitting volleyball that PMVC would be able to supply a self sustaining session in the Plymouth Community in the very near future.
Having already been invited back to supply another taster session in June, I am confident that this could be the launch pad on which to create something new and vibrant in the city to not only embrace our Local disability community but also to celebrate our City's links to the Armed forces. It would work well as a platform for rehabbing volleyball players to continue to train despite injury too.
I am working with Plymouth City Council, Active Devon and the Life Centre to agree a format to deliver this sport in the summer so that anyone who is interested in playing, will get the opportunity to try this it out in a weekly programme.
Watch this space for more information on this exciting development in inclusion sport. Huge thanks must go to Lisa Alford from Active Devon for making it happen and getting me in touch with The Plymouth RC and Help for Heroes team.
