Match Report | Our first game of the season was against last seasons EDVA Ladies League Winners ESVC Tempest who had plenty of experience in their squad. Last seasons issue were all to do with confidence and concentration but this season has started very brightly and from the first set, we had them on the ropes leading 20-17. They had a flurry of offence that saw them snatch the set 25-22 but it was a fine start and ...a sharp reminder to them that we have improved from last season. The 2nd set was the only set where we had a blip (I missed most of the first 12 points as Imogen had locked herself in the toilet!). I called a timeout at 18-7 down and from there the fight was back on but too late in the set as they won 25-14. In the 3rd they had an urgency about their play to seal a win but every time I challenged our players to improve they did. Fantastic rallies ensued as well as some fine pickups from the back of the hall! It still went to Storm 25-17. The 4th set saw us make a comeback from 9-3 down to be level 21-21 with some brilliant blocking against their giant middle hitters! The 5th set was our best chance for a consolation set win and again the game saw some fantastic rallies that you would expect to see in SW league action! Storm proved too strong and won the 5th set too 15-11. I am bursting with pride with how the girls played not just as individuals but as a team. The movement, positioning of cover and pressure on our opponents improved from set to set and that elusive set win will be ours soon enough, I promise! Thank you to Karis for debuting and providing your experience and guidance in sets 2-4. Also a big well done to Mia our youngest player who won a lot of points on her serving and hitting. A great pressure player in the making. MVP went to Alicia for another fine performance setting and hitting in the middle but mostly I feel for your backcourt cover which was superb. And to our captain Evelyn whose approach to the game and standard of play and motivation was inspiring for those on and off the court. Final thank yous go to Yvonne who referee’d another fine performance supporting the club - Viktor who helped run the crèche as well as assisted in cheering and motivating our team - Oliver and Joe who were my assistant coaches and No1 supporters! And finally to David Cranch for some great photos yet again! Next game is on Saturday 18th November 2-4pm at Plymstock. Go PMVC! |
