Match Report

There was a distinct feeling of Deja Vu as PMVC Skills Group Drakes continued their League campaign against Exeter University 1. Having already played them in their opening game of the season, PMVC were supposed to travel to Exeter for the return fixture, however, due to issues with the venue and in a flurry of communication on Friday we offered them to use Plymstock School for their "home" fixture.

with an 11am match start, Exeter Uni brought a more experienced squad this time around and Captain, Dan Tapson, (playing in his first game this season due to injury) continued to blend experienced and developing players in the Drakes Squad. Marking his long awaited return from injury was veteran playmaker, Alun "Taff" Griffiths as well as Victoria Wilkins, Chelsea Mitchell, Luke Allen-Gdanitz, Lara Sowden, Alipour Morteza playing as Libero and making his competitive debut for PMVC, Dil Teli.

PMVC Skills Group Drakes started brightly with the setters establishing control to take the first set 25-17. In the 2nd set, the squad was rotated with Sowden continuing her development as a setter opposite Wilkins. Exeter took advantage and levelled the game with the second set, 25-17. The 3rd set saw Exeter lead 7-1 but with a fantastic all round display by junior star Mitchell and some impressive work from our defensive specialist Libero, Morteza, Drakes regained composure and won the set 25-22. The 4th set was also a close encounter but Allen-Gdanitz made the difference playing a great mix of defence and attack through the middle (which was out of his familiar position as Outside Hitter), picking up an MVP in the process as PMVC closed out the set 26-24 and an insurmountable 3-1 set lead. Exeter grabbed the consolation of the fifth and final set 15-10, but Drakes gave invaluable court time to the whole squad and were still deserving winners by 3 sets to 2.

It was a great overall performance by the Plymouth team as they stay in the hunt near the top of the table with 2 wins out of 3 so far this season. Captain Tapson was happy with the team spirit and character shown by his teams performance.

Next up for Drakes is another rematch as unbeaten Taunton Panthers travel to Plymouth for another showdown that could prove decisive for both teams.  to ensure you dont miss out on this top of the table clash.  To ensure you dont miss out on the action for this top of the table clash, come to Plymstock School 4pm on 2nd November.
